Hard flooring makes sense in high-traffic interior areas. The foyer, bathroom, laundry room, and kitchen benefit from a floor surface that does not trap dirt and is easily cleaned. If these areas feature a concrete floor, decorative paint can enhance it, creating a surface with a unique appearance that is also easy to maintain.
You will need:
• Plastic sheeting to cover walls
• Concrete overlay
• Concrete stain
• Sealer
• Reinforced nylon tape (pre-marked)
• Hopper sprayer
• Paddle bit
• Chalk line
• Tape measure
• Work clothes
• Pencil
Step 1: Determine the center line of your concrete floor, using the tape measure. A 21-grid pattern will be created so lay out the lines on the floor by making equal marks with the pencil approximately every 2 feet. Make matching marks on the floor located at the opposite end of this room.
Step 2: With the chalk line, lay the grid out in one direction and place the nylon tape over the chalked lines. Work in the other direction, following the same process.
Step 3: Put on the work clothes and cover room walls with plastic sheeting.
Step 4: Mix the water, concrete stain, and concrete overlay according to the manufacturer directions. To prevent clumping, add the overlay powder to the water, not vice versa. Use the paddle bit to mix the ingredients for two minutes until the mixture has a consistency similar to frosting. Let the mixture set for a few minutes and then stir one more time with the paddle bit.
Step 5: Use the hopper sprayer to spray this mixed overlay onto the floor. Make a speckled pattern by spraying slowly and evenly. To create a contrasting appearance and fill in gaps, apply a second color on top of the first. Wait overnight for the concrete overlay to set.
Step 6: Once the floor is dry, remove the nylon tape.
Step 7: Apply waterproof sealer to cover the floor and let it dry before walking over the area.
